The toothbrush designed and developed by M&H researchers is an advanced living medical appliance to prevent a secondary infection of dental diseases through low-level semiconductor laser therapy of the wavelength range of 635nm that can sterilize and prohibit the growth of various harmful germs or bacteria on a toothbrush after brushing the teeth, and has the effects of relieving pain of dental diseases caused by the growth of various germs and bacteria in the mouth.

M&H Laser toothbrush is using the method to irradiate low-level semiconductor laser of the wavelength range of 635nm/7nm for medical application to the toothbrush bristle.
It works by the programmed teeth care system, and the laser will be on for 55 seconds, which is the recommended time for treatment of the affected area, if you press the mode switch once. (At this time, irradiate laser on the affected part directly without toothpaste.)
Laser will flicker 5 times at 0.5-second intervals between 55 and 60 seconds, and informs a user of completion of treatment for the affected parts.
After finishing treatment on the affected area, brush your teeth with toothpaste for 2 minutes. After 2-minutes teeth washing, laser will flicker 3 times at 0.5-second intervals. At this time, wash the toothbrush with running water cleanly. And then, keep the toothbrush upright after teeth wash and treatment of the affected area with clean water for 1minute 57 seconds.
Its operating time after switching to On Mode is 5 minutes in all. After the 5 minutes, laser goes off and all the programs are terminated. The instrument is switched to Sleep Mode.
M&H Laser toothbrush is applying low-level semiconductor laser therapy (LLLT) at the wavelength range of 635nm.
As M&H Laser toothbrush is applying semiconductor laser below 7mW, it won’t harm the tissues eyes) sensitive to light by concentrating energy only on the affected area.
M&H Laser toothbrush has adopted the method of refilling toothbrush heads, and laser will be irradiated only when a toothbrush bristle head is refilled in the laser irradiation hole on the body. (Safety switch of laser irradiation hole works.)
M&H Laser toothbrush will automatically stop working 5 minutes after it starts to work.

How to use and notes on use
1) What users prepare
- Insert one specified battery [alkaline 1.5V AA SIZE](Never use a different type of batteries)
- Insert the toothbrush bristle fit for a user’s age in the laser irradiation hole. .
2) How to use
- Press the Mode switch once, and it will start to work.
- When laser is on, it’s now time to treat the affected area (55 seconds)
- After 55 seconds, laser will be flicker at 0.5-second intervals for 5 seconds.
- After treatment for the affected part, brush your teeth with toothpaste for 2 minutes.
(The recommended time to brush your teeth is around 2 minutes)
- After brushing your teeth for 2 minutes, laser will flicker at 0.5-second intervals three times.
At this time, wash the toothbrush with toothpaste applied with running water cleanly, and then clean your teeth and the affected area with
clean water for 1 minute 57 seconds. Keep the toothbrush upright after finishing all these procedures.
The operating time of the product is 5 minute in all. After 5 minutes laser goes automatically and the product is switched to Sleep Mode.
- The replacement cycle is around 30 days in case of teeth wash twice a day.
3) How to keep and maintain after use
- Keep the product at a well-ventilated place.
- Be careful not to keep the product at a place with vibration and shocks (including case of carriage)
- Keep it at a safe place away from places that has chemicals or gas generating stuff.
4) Notes on use
- Do not alter and take apart the product at will.
- This product is not for medical application used at hospitals.
- Never use the product for any other purposes except for teeth and mouth washing.
5) Using environment and using conditions
- Do not use the product for any other purposes except for tooth and mouth washing.
- Place not affected by air including air pressure, wind, sunlight, salt and etc.
- Place not a chemical storehouse and place without gas generating stuff.
6) Notes on malfunction and prohibition on alteration
- When the product has any problems, never try to take it apart at will and contact a dealer or a customer service center at once.
- Medical instruments should never be altered.
How to replace the brush head
① Separating the brush head : Hold the body of the toothbrush firmly with one hand firmly. Use your other hand to turn the brush head counterclockwise. When you see the “Insert Open” words appear, pull on the brush head and remove it.
② Replacing the brush head : Make sure the “Insert Open” words printed on the new brush head are facing you. Then insert the new replacement brush head and turn clockwise. The word “Close” should now be visible.
How to replace the battery
① Hold the body of the toothbrush and open the battery cover by twisting it clockwise.
② Take out the used battery and put in the new battery according to the battery diagram on the battery holder.
③ Lock the battery cover in place by turning it counter clockwise.
The typical bio-stimulation effects by LLLT are the anti-inflammation, immunosuppression, vasodiatation, relieving the pain, anti-dropsy, curing injuries and etc., and the typical application method is low level Laser blood irradiation (LBI)

Introduction to develoment of Laser toothbrush

During our research, we collected a great deal of clinical trial data regarding the successful use of Low Level Laser Therapy to treat Dentin Hypersensitivity. We discovered a majority of Korean citizens suffer from Dentin Hypersensitivity, but that the only treatment they can had for the symptoms is to make an appointment with a dentist, and nothing else. Clinical trial of Laser toothbrush
We adopted the following clinical trials in order to prove the effects of Laser toothbrush.
* Title : A Comparative, Multi-Center, Double Blind, Randomized Clinical Trial to Assess the Safety and Efficacy of the “Laser Toothbrush, a Low-Level Laser Therapy Toothbrush for the Treatment of Dentin Hypersensitivity "
* Trial Period : February 16, 2009 to April 8, 2009

* Method: The subjects of the test group shall use Laser Toothbrushes for one month.
The subjects of the control group shall use placebo Laser Toothbrushes for one month.
We measured and compared scores on the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) one month after start of treatment.
The VAS is used to objectively evaluate pain, which is subjective.
* Number of Trial Subjects : 96 subjects were collected; Nine subjects failed to complete the trial.
A total of 87 subjects completed the clinical trial.
▶ Clinical Trial Results
In the reference, dentin hypersensitivity patients visited a hospital and received low-level laser therapy from a medical specialist.
The best result they found was 3.17. We compared clinical trial data based on this figure.

It was evaluated that treatment of Dentin Hypersensitivity using the Laser Toothbrush is effective.
At the one-month time-point (Visit 3) for the ITT Set, the mean differed with the baseline by -3.31±1.79 for the treatment group, and by -0.88±1.86 for the control group. Also, when normality was tested, it did not sufficiently meet the qualifications for normality, so the Wilcoxon’s rank sum test was used to see if any difference existed in the two groups. The results showed that significant differences did exist between the control group and the treatment group (p-value = 0.0001).
Before the study of the low level Laser Toothbrush in comparison to the placebo laser toothbrush, differences in VAS between the treatment group and the control group did not exist. However, after the study, a significant effect was observed in the treatment group. Although the effective outcome can be attributed somewhat to the placebo laser toothbrush, the treatment group was able to lower the sensation of pain by a remarkable difference: 2.44±1.83 in VAS. Therefore it can be said that the effectiveness of laser toothbrush use compared with placebo is clear.
For the above reasons, we find that the low-level Laser Toothbrush is considered to be an effective clinical tool for reducing pain that arises from dentin hypersensitivity.
It was also proven that Laser Toothbrush does not have any negative effect on the human body.
Achievements of Laser toothbrush

What is Dentin Hypersensitivity
▶ Definition of Dentin Hypersensitivity
Human dental matter is the hardest tissue in the body.
The tooth consists of a crown which is the main body of tooth, and the root which is located deep in the jaw bone. The root is made up of teeth enamel that surrounds the outside of the root, and dentin that is located inside of the root. Inside of the root is pulp that consists of various cells, blood vessels, and nerve fibers. The enamel surrounding the crown, and outside of the root is cementum.
As you get older, your gums shrink, exposing the root of the gum, causing the root to decay. Due to improper brushing of teeth, enamel and cementum is abrased, exposing the dentin. When the exposed dentin gets stimulated, it affects the pulp as well, causing pain and discomfort issues. Stimulation of the exposed dentin comes from everyday life, such as the cold water you use when brushing your teeth, cold drinks, acid drinks or sweet foods, and cold air inhaled during winter, among other stimulations. When these kinds of stimulations accumulate, teeth can feel hypersensitive even when touched with a toothbrush, which can causes a decrease in quality of life. Therefore, dentin hypersensitivity is not just a sensation you feel, but a pain that can be very serious. Dentin hypersensitivity is a short and acute pain that occurs when thermal, evaporating, mechanical, osmotic, or chemical stimulations are applied to exposed dentin rather than due to another decayed tooth or a disease.
▶ Causes of Dentin Hypersensitivity
The pain of dentin hypersensitivity can be quite confusing for both patients and dentists, because most patients are not sure where the pain comes from, or which tooth is in trouble. It is also very hard for dentists to diagnose which tooth is exposed and causing the pain. However, it is ovbious that the pain is a proof that the dentin is exposed and needs treatment. Not all dentin that are exposed show this kind of pain. The pulp is very defensive of its own tissues, and when the dentin gets exposed slowly throughout a long period of time, the pulp can create a layer for the dentin to protect it. In this case, even when the root is exposed very noticeably, the tooth does not show any specific pain. On the other hand, a very recent exposure of the dentin which is hardly noticeable can be very painful. If the warning signs like this are not taken care of, the pulp tissue will be damaged severely and will eventually need complicated treatments for the root
Effects of low-level laser therapy (LLLT)
Laser is divided into high-level and low-level laser according to its power generation. The wavelength range of high-level laser used in the medical area is around 3,000~10,000mW is used to incise the tissues during medical operation, and it irradiates heat during the process. The wavelength range of low-level laser is 1~500mW, and is used as light energy without heat generation.While high-level laser has the effect to burn the cells or tissues by sinking into the cells and evaporating moisture in the cells through heat generation, low-level laser goes through the surface of the skin without causing any other damages on the skin, and only its light energy goes into the body. The cells of the body absorbing the laser light change the light energy into chemical energy that can cure damaged cells, cure damaged area and relieve pain, which is called the bio-stimulation effect. Until the late 1990s, the first low-level laser for medical application of the red light wavelength (630~670nm) was developed in 1962, and until the late 1960s many doctor and scholars had made researches on the bio-stimulation effect of low-level laser and its applications since Endre Mester in Hungary reported on the healing effect of low-level laser therapy. Also, in 1974 the Drug Administration in the old USSR approved of use of laser appliances for medical treatment first in the world, and thereafter low-level laser therapy(LLLT) has been used widely for medical practices for past 30 years, and has been a big part of medical physics. Until the mid 1980s, wide range of researches on He-Ne Laser of 632.8nm had been made, and clinical trials also had been carried out. Lots of researches on the metabolic stimulation effect of the diode laser in the wavelength range of 830~1300nm on the living body have been carried out. Besides, as for the blue and infrared lasers, lots of researches on prevention of infection have been carried out.
